Abscess, Cellulitis

Both abscesses and cellulitis are infections affecting the skin and underlying tissues. They are common conditions treated by general surgeons when severe or unresponsive to conservative treatments.

1. Abscess

An abscess is a localized collection of pus in the tissues caused by infection.

Symptoms:

  • A swollen, red, and painful lump.
  • Warm to the touch.
  • May have a visible head or point where pus is likely to drain.
  • Fever or chills in severe cases.

Causes:

  • Bacterial infection: Most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus.
  • Ingrown hairs, skin injuries, or blocked sweat or oil glands.
  • Post-surgical wound infections or injections.
2. Cellulitis

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Unlike an abscess, it is not localized and spreads through the skin.

Symptoms:

  • Red, swollen, and tender skin.
  • Warmth over the affected area.
  • Fever, chills, or general fatigue.
  • Progression may lead to blisters or open sores.

Causes:

  • Bacterial infection: Often caused by Streptococcus or Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Entry points: Cuts, scrapes, insect bites, ulcers, or surgical wounds.
  • Risk factors: Diabetes, immune suppression, poor circulation, or lymphedema.
When to See a General Surgeon
  • Abscess that is large, painful, or recurrent.
  • Failure of antibiotics to resolve an abscess or cellulitis.
  • Signs of spreading infection (red streaks, high fever, or worsening pain).
  • Cellulitis that involves sensitive areas (face, hands, feet, or genitals) or is associated with systemic symptoms.

Dr. Abhijit Budhkar ensure timely and effective management of these conditions, often preventing complications like sepsis or tissue necrosis.
