Hydrocele

A hydrocele is a condition characterized by the accumulation of fluid within the sac surrounding a testicle, leading to swelling in the scrotum. It is a common condition in males, particularly in newborns, but it can also occur in older boys and men.

Types of Hydrocele
  • Congenital Hydrocele: Occurs due to a failure of the processus vaginalis (a thin tube that normally closes before birth) to seal off, allowing fluid from the abdominal cavity to flow into the scrotum. Common in newborns and often resolves on its own by the first year of life.
  • Acquired Hydrocele: Develops later in life due to inflammation, infection, injury, or other conditions. Often associated with underlying causes such as:
    Trauma.
    Infections (e.g., epididymitis or orchitis).
Tumors in the testicle or scrotum.
    Post-surgical complications.
Symptoms
  • Painless swelling in the scrotum.
  • A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum.
  • Discomfort or aching in some cases, especially if the hydrocele is large.
  • In severe cases, difficulty walking or sitting comfortably.
When to Consult a General Surgeon
  • Persistent swelling or discomfort in the scrotum.
  • Rapid growth of the swelling.
  • Associated pain, redness, or signs of infection.

Hydrocele treatment is straightforward and typically yields excellent outcomes. Early consultation with Dr. Abhijit Budhkar can help ensure prompt diagnosis and management.
