Pilonidal Sinus
A pilonidal sinus is a small tunnel or cavity in the skin, typically located near the tailbone (sacrococcygeal region) at the top of the buttocks. It often contains hair, debris, and skin, which can lead to infection and abscess formation. This condition is more common in men and people who sit for long periods.
Causes of Pilonidal Sinus
- Hair Penetration: Loose hairs penetrate the skin and trigger a foreign body reaction, leading to inflammation and infection.
- Skin Irritation: Friction or pressure from prolonged sitting or tight clothing can cause skin breakdown.
- Infection: Bacteria entering the sinus can cause abscesses or chronic drainage.
Risk Factors
- Excessive body hair, especially in the sacrococcygeal region.
- Coarse or curly hair that is prone to embedding in the skin.
- Prolonged sitting or sedentary lifestyle.
- Obesity, which increases skin folds and friction.
- Poor hygiene.
- Family history of pilonidal sinus.
Symptoms
- Initial Stage (Asymptomatic): A small dimple or pit in the skin. May go unnoticed until complications arise.
- Infected Pilonidal Sinus:
Pain or tenderness near the tailbone.
Swelling or redness in the affected area.
Drainage of pus or blood, sometimes foul-smelling.
Fever, in severe infections.
- Chronic Pilonidal Disease: Recurrent infections. Formation of multiple sinuses or tracts.
Prevention
- Maintain good hygiene, especially in the sacrococcygeal area.
- Regularly remove excess hair in the region using shaving, depilatory creams, or laser hair removal.
- Avoid prolonged sitting and friction in the area.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing to reduce irritation.
When to See a General Surgeon
- Persistent pain or swelling in the sacrococcygeal region.
