Catheterisation

Catheterization is a medical procedure where a catheter, a thin tube, is inserted into a body cavity, duct, or vessel to drain fluid, administer medication, or perform diagnostic tests.

Types of Catheterization:
  • Urinary Catheterization: Insertion of a catheter into the bladder to drain urine.
  • Cardiac Catheterization: Insertion of a catheter into the heart via blood vessels to evaluate heart function and blood flow.
  • Gastrointestinal Catheterization: Insertion of a catheter into the gastrointestinal tract to relieve blockage, collect specimens, or administer medications.
  • Peritoneal Catheterization: Insertion of a catheter into the peritoneal cavity (the space in the abdomen that contains the intestines, liver, and other organs) to remove fluid.
Benefits of Catheterization:
  • Allows for controlled drainage of bodily fluids.
  • Enables the administration of medication directly into a specific area.
  • Useful for diagnostic evaluations and monitoring specific health conditions.
When to See a General Surgeon:
  • Urinary Retention: For long-term urinary catheter management.
  • Heart Conditions: For cardiac catheterization to evaluate and treat heart issues.
  • Abdominal Fluid Build-up: For drainage of excess fluid in conditions like ascites.
  • Chronic Conditions: When prolonged catheter use is required to manage specific health conditions.

Dr. Abhijit Budhkar provides catheterization services for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, ensuring precise and safe insertion while minimizing complications.
