Excessive Bleeding

Excessive bleeding, also known as abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) or menorrhagia, refers to menstrual bleeding that is unusually heavy or prolonged. It can occur at any age and may signal underlying health issues requiring medical evaluation and treatment.

Symptoms of Excessive Bleeding:
  • Soaking through one or more sanitary pads or tampons every hour for several hours.
  • Passing large blood clots during menstruation.
  • Menstrual periods lasting more than seven days.
  • Fatigue or shortness of breath, often due to anemia.
  • Disruption of daily activities due to heavy bleeding.
Causes of Excessive Bleeding:
  • Imbalance between estrogen and progesterone can cause an overgrowth of the uterine lining.
  • Common in conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or perimenopause.
  • Fibroids: Non-cancerous growths in the uterus.
  • Polyps: Small growths on the uterine lining.
  • Adenomyosis: Uterine tissue grows into the uterine muscle.
  • Bleeding Disorders: Conditions like von Willebrand disease or platelet dysfunction.
  • Infections: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or endometritis.
  • Pregnancy-Related Issues: Ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, or placenta abnormalities.
  • Cancer or Precancerous Conditions: Uterine, cervical, or ovarian cancers.
  • Medications: Blood thinners or hormonal treatments.
  • Other Medical Conditions: Thyroid disorders, kidney disease, or liver problems.
Importance of Seeking Treatment:
  • Prevents Complications: Addresses underlying issues like anemia or serious health conditions.
  • Improves Quality of Life: Restores normal menstrual patterns and reduces discomfort.
  • Protects Reproductive Health: Ensures timely intervention for conditions affecting fertility.
