Constipation, Bloating, IBS

These are common gastrointestinal issues that can significantly impact a person’s daily life. While general surgeons typically focus on surgical interventions, they may also address these conditions when symptoms are severe or do not respond to conservative treatments.

1. Constipation

Constipation is characterized by infrequent bowel movements, difficulty passing stools, or stools that are hard and dry.

Causes of Constipation:

  • Low fiber intake: A diet low in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Dehydration: Inadequate fluid intake can lead to hardened stools.
  • Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of physical activity slows bowel movement.
  • Stress: Emotional stress can interfere with normal bowel function.

Symptoms of Constipation:

  • Fewer than three bowel movements per week.
  • Hard, dry stools.
  • Straining during bowel movements.
  • Abdominal discomfort and bloating.
2. Bloating

Bloating is the sensation of fullness or swelling in the abdomen, often accompanied by excessive gas production or trapped gas.

Causes of Bloating:

  • Poor digestion: Foods like beans, dairy, or high-fat meals can cause bloating.
  • Swallowing air: Eating too fast, chewing gum, or drinking through straws.
  • Food intolerances: Lactose intolerance or sensitivity to certain carbohydrates.
  • Constipation: Slower transit time in the gut can lead to bloating.
  • Hormonal changes: Can cause water retention and bloating.

Symptoms of Bloating:

  • Swelling in the abdomen.
  • Tightness or discomfort after eating.
  • Excessive gas or flatulence.
3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS is a common chronic gastrointestinal disorder that affects the large intestine, causing symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and/or constipation.

Causes of IBS:

  • Gut-brain interaction: Abnormal communication between the brain and the intestines.
  • Food sensitivities: Certain foods may trigger IBS symptoms.
  • Stress: Emotional and psychological stress can worsen symptoms.
  • Gut microbiome imbalance: Alterations in gut bacteria can play a role.
  • Hormonal changes: Women may experience IBS symptoms during menstrual cycles.

Symptoms of IBS:

  • Abdominal pain or cramping.
  • Bloating and gas.
  • Alternating constipation and diarrhea.
  • Mucus in stools.
  • Feeling of incomplete evacuation after bowel movements.
When to See a General Surgeon:
  • Severe or Chronic Constipation: When constipation doesn’t respond to dietary changes and medications.
  • Unresolved Bloating: If bloating significantly impacts daily life and persists despite lifestyle modifications.
  • IBS-Related Complications: If IBS symptoms cause severe pain, discomfort, or bowel obstruction.

Dr. Abhijit Budhkar offers both non-surgical and surgical interventions to help alleviate symptoms of constipation, bloating, and IBS, restoring normal bowel function and improving quality of life.
