Hernia (All Types)
A hernia occurs when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot or opening in the muscle or surrounding connective tissue, usually in the abdominal wall. Hernias can happen in various parts of the body and are categorized based on their location and the underlying cause.
Types of Hernias:
- Inguinal Hernia: Most common type, especially in men. Occurs when tissue (such as part of the intestine) protrudes through a weak spot in the groin or inguinal canal.
- Femoral Hernia: More common in women. Occurs when tissue pushes through the femoral canal near the upper thigh, just below the groin.
- Umbilical Hernia: Occurs near the navel (belly button) due to a weakness in the abdominal wall. Common in newborns but can also occur in adults.
- Hiatal Hernia: Happens when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. Often associated with symptoms of acid reflux or GERD.
- Incisional Hernia: Develops at the site of a previous surgical incision where the abdominal wall hasn't healed properly. Common in people who have undergone abdominal surgery.
- Epigastric Hernia: Occurs between the navel and the lower part of the ribcage in the midline of the abdomen. Often involves fat or tissue pushing through a weak spot.
- Spigelian Hernia: Rare type of hernia that occurs along the edge of the rectus abdominis muscle.
- Obturator Hernia: Rare and often seen in older women. Tissue passes through an opening in the pelvic bone (obturator foramen).
- Diaphragmatic Hernia: Occurs when organs from the abdomen move into the chest cavity due to a defect in the diaphragm. Can be congenital or acquired.
- Sports Hernia (Athletic Pubalgia): A soft tissue injury in the groin area caused by repetitive physical activity. Does not involve a true herniation but causes similar symptoms.
Symptoms:
- A visible lump or bulge.
- Pain or discomfort, especially when lifting, coughing, or bending.
- Nausea or vomiting (in severe cases).
- Weakness or pressure in the affected area.
